I've always had a soft spot for this film and thought it was one of Scorsese's best films, yet I never seen it ranks high amongst his filmography but for me it's a Top 5 film of his alongside 'Goodfellas,' 'Raging Bull,' 'Taxi Driver,' and 'The Departed' and this recent viewing further confirmed it. While things start off great, they quickly descend into chaos and disaster as Sam's marriage to his money hungry wife Ginger, Nicky's boiling temper and inflated ego, and the various politicians and criminals Sam is in bed with start to destroy everything he's built and create a dark tale of greed, distrust, betrayal, and corruption in Sin City. 'Casino' is an adaptation of the novel 'Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas' from author Nicholas Pileggi and tells the story of Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, a low-level criminal who is hired by the Gaming Commission to run the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas and is accompanied by enforcer Nicky Santoro who act as his protection. Hey there! Back today with yet another review and today it's for a Martin Scorsese gem that doesn't get the love it quite deserves as one of his all-time best.
